Tips can help homeowners redo kitchen

You can save money and still have custom touches when remodeling your kitchen, says Jim Krengel, a kitchen designer.

Some tips from Krengel, who is design director of the Maytag Kitchen Ideas Center:
  • Instead of buying a ready-made floor-to-ceiling pantry, combine two ready-made base cabinets, by stacking one on top of the other. Use the base cabinet with drawers right-side- up on the bottom, then top it with a two-door base cabinet, turned upside-down, with its toe kick-space removed.

  • Base cabinets are deeper than top cabinets, so you can get more canned goods and staples into the door cabinet than you could with an above-counter cabinet.

  • If there’s still room, use the cabinet top to hold an attractive, but seldom-used serving dish or salad bowl. If the cabinet top is close to the ceiling, install molding to hide the edges and give a built-in look.

  • Attach wall cabinets to the sides or back of a work island or dining island in the kitchen. The cabinets can provide foot-deep storage. If you use 42-inch-high units behind a 35-inch-high island, the work area is hidden from view.

  • For a decorative way of storing staples, buy a 15-by-30-inch or 18-by-30-inch glass door cabinet and turn it on its side. The glass door will then open out and down, and can be fitted with tilt-out bins for staples such as beans, peas, rice, macaroni, snacks – even dog biscuits.

  • For more storage space for narrow items, re-cover the wasted space between the wall studs. The space, about 3 1/2 inches deep, is behind the sheetrock walls. It can be exposed and then painted or lined with patterned adhesive-backed plastic to house spices, canned goods, glasses and other skinny items.

  • If you don’t want to eliminate a window, but it is keeping you from installing a needed storage cabinet, consider installing a cabinet with glass sides in front of the window. Then place items like glasses in the cabinet so that the light and view are diffused but not altogether removed.
