Masterful room design begins with the bed

I hope you can help solve a difficult decorating problem in the home I moved into a year ago.

So far, most of my decorating efforts are coming together nicely. But my one stumbling block is the bedroom, which, even with furniture, seems very large and empty.

The room opens from the hallway in the middle of one long wall; on another wall is a huge double window. On the wall opposite that, there is a bathroom/closet door that splits the wall. Only one long wall is clear of any obstacles.

I don’t have much furniture, but what I do have includes a double bed with a couple of round bedside tables, a hope chest, a chest of drawers, and a dresser with a swivel mirror.

To help fill the space, I have also added a love seat, a bookcase and a television, all of which are not necessary.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

The master bedroom is perhaps the only space where you can feel completely free to express your own sense of style and color.

Since most of the time spent in the bedroom is spent in or on the bed, it should be treated as the room design’s starting point.

I’m all for “creative clutter” stacked books on a coffee table but unnecessary clutter can be a turn-off. But there are stylish storage ideas to alleviate the clutter problem throughout the house, and especially in bedrooms.


The bedroom, designed for sleep, also is the repository for clothes, shoes, scarves and jewelry. We might also keep our linens and books and magazines there. Here are some ideas that work for me:

If you have the space, use substantial dressers or bureaus for wardrobe essentials. Small drawers or chests can house jewelry or important papers. I have a wonderful old box, found at a flea market, on top of the dresser to hide keys, wallet, receipts or notes that land there at night.

Armoires make handsome and versatile storage units for the bedroom, providing space when dressers are full. Store linen in the upper shelves. Or hide the television behind the doors.

Make the most of under-bed space with portable rolling drawers. This is a good place to store out-of-season clothing.

Closet organizers, such as those from California Closets, can free an amazing amount of space in closets. This is especially true for men’s closets. Dividing them into upper and lower levels for suits and shirts essentially doubles the usable area.

An old trunk at the foot of the bed is excellent for storing blankets and comforters and extra pillows.

Select bedside tables that will hold, and conceal, books and magazines, TV remotes, sleeping masks, radio, clock or other bedtime paraphernalia.
