Things to Consider Before Buying a Farmhouse Dining Table

In many cultures food is at the center of any social gathering, which makes the kitchen and the eating areas the heart of the home. No other areas of the house get as much regular use as the kitchen, except maybe the bedrooms, which is why it is so important to make sure that your spaces are decorated and designed exactly as you like them. In any eating area, the focal point of the space is the table, which can not only be used for serving food, but as a place to do work, store things, and to commune. When shopping for the perfect piece of furniture to fill this space, you may be a bit overwhelmed since there are literally thousands of options to choose from. However, by selecting a farmhouse dining table, you can rest assured that your piece of furniture will work no matter what since they are so versatile and timeless.

Farmhouse dining tables are large, wooden tables that look rustic and have a certain old world charm about them. They are the types of pieces that you would associate with a country villa in Tuscany or in the south of France. It is this heft and warmth that makes them so attractive to many home owners. For one, picking this style of furniture is a safe bet since it can fit in well with any sort of existing decorating style. Don’t be fooled by the word “farm.” While these pieces are great for rustic design styles and country decor, they work equally well in modern and contemporary homes. One downside to modern designs is that they can often look cold and sterile since they rely on clean lines and minimalistic designs. However, many designers offset the cold, austere look by bringing in elements of nature into the space. A large farmhouse dining room table can add warmth and softness to an otherwise Spartan room.

When shopping for farmhouse dining room tables, you need to consider a few things. First, formulate a budget, clearly defining how much you want to spend. The prices of a farmhouse dining set can vary tremendously, ranging in price from a couple of hundreds of dollars to several thousands of dollars, depending on the material that it is made from and the manufacturer’s brand name. Pieces that are made from woods like cherry and mahogany will cost much more than pieces made out of cheaper woods like pine and oak. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be better for your home. For one, the more expensive woods are typically darker in color than pine and oak, which may or may not work well with your color palette. Woods like cherry and mahogany are also more difficult to maintain since they can scratch easily and show signs of wear. On the other hand, pieces made out of pine hide their imperfections well, making them perfect for high traffic areas like your kitchen or eating spaces.

Next, you need to consider how much space you have to work with. These pieces of furniture are quite large, which is part of their charm; however they may not work well in small spaces. If you really want to buy a piece of furniture with a country design, but have limited space, consider looking at round dining room tables. Circular pieces are space savers because every inch of the perimeter can be used for seating, unlike in a rectangular piece where no one can sit in the corners. Also, you get the most surface area for the width with a circular shape.

A farmhouse dining table is a great addition to any home. Combining form with function, these pieces of furniture have been the center of the family kitchen for years and will continue to be popular ling into the future.
