Low-cost tips to renovate dull bathrooms

DOES YOUR BATHROOM BORE YOU? If pennies are still being saved for the dream renovation, here are some suggestions from interior designer Jacqueline Glass, owner of Jacqueline Glass and Associates Inc. in Toronto, on ways to make smaller, less-expensive changes:

TIMELINE If renovations are planned within six months, stick it out and don’t bother with temporary changes. If it is a year, paint may be the quick solution. If two years or more is the target, painting or replacing the counter and adding more storage will help make a bathroom livable.

BUDGET Be an informed renovator. Look at the varying cost of paint, counters and fixtures, and add them up. If spending $100 on one item would help the room and satisfy esthetic and budgetary demands, it is the right decision.

COLOUR “White it out a coat of white paint will solve many temporary problems, especially builder’s beige.” Hotel style is still sought after by most homeowners the combination of minimalism and monochromatic color schemes. A new set of white towels, white cotton shower curtains, pillar candles, a tray to hold apothecary jars filled with daily used items will make a bathroom into a proper retreat.

TEXTURE Glass jars, vases used as storage, frosted soap dispensers and dishes add a freshness to a bathroom. They also allow the natural colors to show through. “Spa style is very popular, and showing off glass and natural, light-colored wood or rattan is calming in the bathroom.” Brushed nickel fixtures are au courant and add to the serene palette of the room.

STORAGE Adding baskets and shelving immediately solves a major need in a bathroom space for towels, toiletries, laundry and all the paper products (toilet paper, tissues). Later, baskets can be used elsewhere in the home if built-in storage is part of a renovation.

ACCESSORIES Changing towel bars, hooks, cupboard hardware, or taps will have an immediate effect on the look and can be incorporated into the future.

SCENT Ensure there is a pleasing scent beyond cleanser clean, lavender, citrus, vanilla are soothing and stimulating and come in room sprays, bath salts, shower gels, soaps and candles. “Aromatherapy enhances a soak in the tub or a quick shower and gives you a respite from a busy life.”
