Practical tips for bathroom bliss

Planning a new or renovating an existing bathroom should take into account some essential basics. Get these right and the resulting bathroom will not only look good, but be functional. The following is a checklist to ensure a bathroom is well designed.

  • Good heating, lighting and mechanical ventilation are vital to ensure a comfortable, dry and warm bathroom all-year round.
  • Electrical power points should meet all regulations and need earth fault circuit protection.
  • For comfortable showering, the inside of the shower should measure no less than 810 millimeters x 810mm.
  • If possible, the flooring should be slip resistant, including the bath if there is a shower positioned over it.
  • There should be good storage.
  • Doors should be easy to open and close make sure they don’t interfere with the shower door or other fittings.
  • If the design means leaving a space between fittings, for example the vanity and the bath, try to ensure it is at least 150mm wide to make cleaning easier.
  • Bath taps should be easily reached from outside the bath.
Common problems:
  • Expecting an open window to provide adequate ventilation. Apart from creating a security risk, an open window is unlikely to provide enough ventilation, particularly in winter, for what is the wettest room in the house.
  • The shower head faces the shower door making turning on the shower a dampening experience.
  • Insufficient storage.
